The Rest of Your Life Can Be the Best of Your Life

rest of your lifeThe key to living the rest of your life with purpose is not a pipe dream! It can be for you.

Have you ever wondered if where you are in life is where you should be? Have you also thought is there something more? What about those long urgings to have at least one month when all the bills are paid, everyone in the family is healthy, and you’re not feeling pressure about losing your job? Do those months exist? According to the media, everyone is going through and struggling with the same things. It almost makes you wonder, if living life is worth the time and trouble.

There is no need to live the rest of your life with compounded regrets over what didn’t go right. Although you may not be able to to do anything about the past, you are in complete control over what happens in your future!

Today is the First day of the rest of your life

If you think about it, no matter how old you are today really is the first day of your future. Each day indeed is a new day since we can only live through January 1, 2018, one time. That day will never come again, would you agree? Now that we’ve established that fact, it’s crucial that you also understand how to capitalize on your new found information.

5 Ways to make the rest of your life, the best of your life

  1. Change your attitude: According to dictionary.com attitude is the manner, disposition, feeling, position, etc., with regard to a person or thing; tendency or orientation, especially of the mind.  In this highly competitive world we’ve created (competition is a good thing by the way), it can be challenging to overcome failures. Sometimes we allow persistent failures to cause us to expect it. This mindset can lead to unconsciously becoming comfortable with failure. Therefore change your attitude and expect positive results, regardless of how it looks and the circumstances.
  2. Set SMART goals: Goal-setting may sound elusive. However, it is as simple as being intentional about what you’d like to accomplish and when. It’s important to know your why. In other words, determine what will motivate you to reach your goal, when those pesky challenges arise. For instance, you could set a goal like this:
    1. Goal: Complete 40 hour self-study baking course
      1. When: May 31, 2018
      2. How: Study/bake two times a week for 3 hours
      3. Where: My kitchen
      4. Why: To bake my wife’s favorite cake for her birthday
  3. Stop the blame game: Nothing will stop you from reaching your best more than the blame game. Oh sure, you’re familiar with people who always have an excuse as to why it’s not their fault. But did you know it’s also possible to accept blame for things entirely outside of your control? Professor and psychology expert Dr. Whitbourne suggests that we sometimes blame others as a way to defend or overshadow our shortcomings. On the other hand, blaming yourself could stem from the internal feeling of constant failure. Either way, its better to accept responsibility for your mistakes, learn from them and move on.
  4. Forgive yourself: To forgive is to let go of the past. No one ever made it to the top focusing on yesterday. As long as you’re human, you will make mistakes, but that is not an excuse to give up on your dreams. Just admit that you blew it, take ownership, and let yourself off the hook.
  5. Make it personal: In this culture of giving of our time, money and effort, it’s hard to find a good reason to be selfish. Oh don’t get me wrong I am all for helping out my fellow man. However, there are times when my wants are more important. If you genuinely want a better life, it’s not going to happen passively. Your life is not a movie when all of the sudden everything is magically perfect in the end. Make a personal promise to yourself, decide what you want and set goals to make it happen.

The rest of your life is Totally in your control

Sure I know what you’re thinking, ‘you don’t know what I’m dealing with.’ Although that may be true, the point is, that doesn’t matter. Regardless of your circumstances, you can be better, and have the life you want. Every successful person has had to overcome challenges, adversity, and obstacles.

Missing the train is an acceptable reason for not making it to the game on time. Using the excuse that your spouse forgot to set the alarm is not. In other words, your life is in your hands. That same persistence and creativity that it took to skip school is still a part of you. Now is the time to use those natural skills to become the person you know you can be and live an extraordinary life.
